General Discussion / Here Come the Golden Bananas!!
« on: January 09, 2018, 09:53:18 AM »
Is anyone else excited about the upcoming Custodes codex? I'm not certain how they may fare in the current 40K setting but nearly all the models look fantastic, so at the very least they will probably wind up being a passion project. My hopes are high that the new codex might be able to do justice to the "Best of the Best", but not going overboard on codex creep while also having at least some semblance of viability.

Any thoughts on the upcoming banana-rama?

Discussion: THE LIST / 2000 Point Baneblade List
« on: November 24, 2017, 10:41:27 AM »
So I've been wanting to field my baneblades for a while now as I love the models but I'm not sure if the list I've constructed so far is a viable one. I have spent the time to magnetize every one of the models so that I can field any non-FW variant because $30 in magnets and some extra time IMO is well worth spending instead of the $150US+ per baneblade kit. Anyway, here is the list I've come up with and would enjoy any feedback you all can provide:

Super Heavy Detachment (Cadian)

Lord of War
Banehammer: (Tremor Cannon; Twin heavy bolter; 2x Lascannons; 2x Twin heavy bolters) 472pts
Shadowsword: (Volcano Cannon; Twin heavy bolter; 2x Lascannons; 2x Twin heavy bolters) 472pts
Stormlord: (Vulcan Mega-bolter; 2x Heavy stubber; Twin heavy bolter; Pintle storm bolter;
2x Lascannons; 2x Twin heavy bolters) 522pts

Spearhead Detachment (Cadian)

Company commander: Chainsword, Las-pistol; Kurov's Aquila relic 30pts
Lord Castellan Creed: 2x Hot-shot laspistols; Power Sword 70pts

Astropath: Las-pistol (Psychic Barrier) 15pts

Heavy Support
Heavy weapons squad: 3x Mortars 33pts
Heavy weapons squad: 3x Mortars 33pts
Heavy weapons squad: 3x Mortars 33pts
Heavy weapons squad: 3x Mortars 33pts
Heavy weapons squad: 3x Mortars 33pts
Heavy weapons squad: 3x Lascannons 78pts

Supreme Command Detachment (Cadian)

Company commander: Chainsword; las-pistol; Relic of Lost Cadia 30pts
Company commander: Chainsword; Las-pistol 30pts
Company commander: Chainsword; Las-pistol 30pts
Tech-priest enginseer (Mars): Omnissian axe; servo arm 52 pts
Tech-priest enginseer (Mars): Omnissian axe; servo arm 52 pts

Astropath: Laspistol; (Nightshroud) 15pts

With the Banehammer and Storlard both offering transport capacity, I was planning on filling them with all the infantry units as they can still shoot from the firing decks. One enginseer would also embark upon these to provide repairs each turn. Certainly there are not a lot of units, but none of the baneblades can be tied up in combat due to the "Steel Behemoth" rule, and between the three of them and their passengers there seems to be a versatile mix of high-yield weaponry, as well as sheer target saturation. Overall the list hits 2000 points on the nose, at a 111PL with 10CP as Creed will be the warlord, providing the list with 2 bonus CP. Now I will have to sacrifice one of those CP to provide the additional relic, but I believe that will be a fair exchange, especially if I can roll hot with the Aquila relic and bring back some CP over the course of the game.

I would like to know what everyone thinks; total garbage, neck-beardy, balanced, whatever it is I'm completely open to your ideas.

Thanks again,

I...I have words. But they are words that are so salty about this piece of formed garbage, that they are perhaps best not suited to this this forum.

All I can say is that if GW believes it is a "modelling" company first and foremost, they need to get rid of the slap-dash creators of this travesty, and install some people with actual artistic vision. Kit-bashing is cool, and an integral  and respected part of the hobby, but it's something I envision more with Orks than Space Marines, especially since the return of the RowBoat.

Maybe the rules will make it desirable, but IMHO it just looks like a hack-job bit of steaming goat-s&%#@. I would love to be able to smash together a Repulsor and a Sicaran just to say "job's done" and then collect a paycheck.

GW, you have a magnificent amount of ideas to draw from... Don't be the tabletop version of  Electronic Arts or Ubisoft.

My hat is off to you for one thing GW; you made an amazing base for a Battle Wagon... too bad people were doing it nearly a decade ago you out of touch hacks....

Discussion: Adeptus Mechanicus / Looking to Start an Ad Mech Army
« on: September 28, 2017, 09:51:08 AM »
Greetings followers of the Machine God! I have been looking into starting up an Ad Mech army since last edition, but have never been able to commit to doing so. However, with the new codex having recently dropped my desire seems to have been renewed. I have been toying around w/ the idea of running a pure Mars Brigade force (since that allows me to field Cawl) as well as the nice 12 total re-rolls, but I am uncertain if the list I've come up with would be a viable one. Here is what I was thinking:

Mars Brigade (+9CP)

Cawl - Warlord
Enginseer - Autocaduceus of Arkhan Land; O. Axe; Servo-Arm
Enginseer - O. Axe; Servo-Arm

2 Rangers + 2 Rangers w/ Arquebii + 1 Ranger Alpha w/ Omnispex
2 Rangers + 2 Rangers w/ Arquebii + 1 Ranger Alpha w/ Omnispex
5 Vanguard + 1 Vanguard Alpha w/ Taser Goad + Omnispex
5 Vanguard + 1 Vanguard Alpha w/ Taser Goad + Omnispex
5 Vanguard + 1 Vanguard Alpha w/ Taser Goad + Omnispex
5 Vanguard + 1 Vanguard Alpha w/ Taser Goad + Omnispex

Cybernetica Datasmith - Gamma pistol; power fist
4 Infiltrators (Flechette blasters + taser goads) + Infiltrator Princeps ( F. blaster + T. goad)
4 Infiltrators (Flechette blasters + taser goads) + Infiltrator Princeps ( F. blaster + T. goad)

Fast Attack
Sydonian Dragoon (Taser lance)
Sydonian Dragoon (Taser lance)
2 Sydonian Dragoons (Taser lances)

Heavy Support
3 Kastelan Robots ( Heavy phosphor on all hard points)
Dunecrawler - Icarus Array; Cognis stubber; Data-tether
Dunecrawler - Icarus Array; Cognis stubber; Data-tether

This tags the list at exactly 2000 points and 122PL, which seems decent on paper, but again I'm not an Ad Mech player and am not super certain about how viable/competitive this list might be with hordes running roughshod, so if anyone has any input it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys, Sindri

General Discussion / A Kickstarter That Might Interest Gamers
« on: August 29, 2017, 12:41:38 PM »
Gamers, a new Kickstarter has been unveiled that may tempt you to spend your hard earned hobby dollars. If you listen to BoLS "Forge the Narrative" podcast, you may already be aware of the project, but it is for a modular gaming table that has been designed for wargaming, RPG'ing, heck even board and card gaming.
Now I don't have a dog in this fight, but with Kickstarters having a specific timeline and this one having 30 days remaining, I wanted to inform people in case they were unaware but would have been interested.

Here is the link to the "Table of Ultimate Gaming":

For anyone who lives in or around the middle GA, USA area and is interested in either starting up, restarting or just looking for a group to play with send me a PM and I'll get an invite to our Facebook page sent your way. The group consists of players who have been in the hobby since Rogue Trader to others who are just starting out, and we always try to keep the salt to a minimum.

Even if you're just going to be in the area, feel free to let me know as there is nearly always someone itching to play with their plastic (or metal) army men!

Discussion: THE LIST / 2000 Point Ultramarine Dread Heavy List
« on: July 21, 2017, 11:23:23 AM »
With the advent of 8th edition and the improvements to vehicles, I was kicking around the idea of a heavy dreadnought list. Obviously this list is going to be spam heavy, and not something I would bring to the club week in and out, but I look at it more as a thought experiment that might actually be a hardliner for tournament prep and play.

Ultramarines Vanguard Detachment

HQ: Techmarine (Conversion beamer, boltgun, chainsword) 78 pts
Elites: 2x Venerable dreadnought (2x dual autocannons) 156 pts each
1x Venerable dreadnought ( Missile launcher, Autocannon) 148 pts
Flyer:  Stormraven (2x hurricane bolters, twin assault can, twin hvy bolter, 2x Stormstrike) 274 pts

Ultramarines Vanguard Detachment

HQ: Techmarine (Conversion beamer, boltgun, chainsword) 78 pts
Elites: 2x Venerable dreadnought (Missile launcher, Twin lascannon) 165 pts
1x Venerable dreadnought ( Heavy plasma cannon, missile launcher) 145 pts
Flyer:  Stormraven (2x hurricane bolters, twin assault can, twin hvy bolter, 2x Stormstrike) 274 pts

Ultramarines Super-Heavy Auxiliary Detachment

Lord of War:  Roboute Guilliman 360 pts

Totals:  1999 points /  106 power level

My thought was to ring Guilliman and the techmarines with the dreads to prevent deep-strike assassination attempts while also maximizing the benefits of Guillimans reroll aura. I tossed around the idea of going plain dreads, but for 20 points more base you get +1WS/BS and the potential chance to negate a wound on the roll of a 6, which I feel would be well worth trying to fit in another dread at the expense of some of the items in the list.

I realize the list does not have a huge number of command points, but given that Guilliman provides a measure of redundancy with rerolls I believe the trade-off is worth it.

The added nugget that the apparent upcoming Ultramarine Chapter Tactic is the ability to break off from close combat and still shoot at -1 to hit will also be a huge boon IMO.

Anyway, feel free to comment on what you think. There are obviously going to be bad matchups (massed conscripts, ork tide) but I think this list might have some promise.

Discussion: THE LIST / 2000pt Fluffy Raptors Chapter List
« on: June 30, 2017, 01:08:01 PM »
So I've been toying around with a Raptors list that fits their fluff for 8th edition, yet would provide a fighting chance against most other lists. Here is what I have come up with:

Battalion Detachment

Lias Issodon - for those unaware, he has an Assault 3 30" Bolter at S:5 AP-4, D:1D3 w/ no bonus for cover saves, ability to disengage from c/c and still shoot along w/ a few other nifty tricks
Captain - power sword, storm bolter

Scout Squad (x2) - 5 scouts + Sergeant, all w/ sniper rifles and camo cloaks
Tactical Squad - 4 marines, 1 marine w/ Heavy Bolter, Sergeant w/ bolt pistol and chainsword

Venerable Dreadnought (x2) - 2x twin autocannon

Heavy support
Devastator Squad (x2)- 4 w/ Multi-melta, 2 marines extra, armorium cherub, sarge w/ storm bolter

Dedicated Transport

Razorback - Lascannon + twin plasma gun, storm bolter

Air Wing Detachment
Stormtalon Gunship (x3)- twin assault cannon, 2 x lascannons

Now with Issodons new 8th rules, he allows me to setup up to 3 troops plus himself anywhere on the board more than 9" away from an enemy, so long as they are Raptors Chapter INFANTRY models and not Termis, Centurions, or Primaris. This would allow me to basically deepstrike my devastator squads and Lias himself to where they would be most beneficial, and w/ Lias being a chapter master, would allow him to possibly give one (or both) of those squads re-rolls to hit if something must be brought down immediately.

The Dreadnoughts are here to provide long range fire support, and the Stormtalons putting the hurt on light armor targets w/ the lascannons punching vehicles or monstrous creatures.

Scouts would provide some much needed character removal from units such as conscript blobs that rely on Commissar presence, and the Captain would most likely be near one of these units in cover to grant them the ability to re-roll the dreaded '1'. The tactical squad can rove around in the back as needed either in or out of the razorbackor setup where required to maximize its firepower.

All in all, it comes out to exactly 2000 points and 114 Power Level

If you see any glaring issues, let me know.

Discussion: THE LIST / Imperial Knights
« on: June 11, 2017, 05:52:45 PM »
So I've been looking at fashioning an Imperial Knight army for the new edition to see how it might function. Here be the list; crush it at your discretion!

Knight Crusader - Avenger Gatling + Rapid-Fire Battle Cannon + Heavy Flamer + 2x Heavy Stubbers + Ironstorm Missle Pod

Knight Paladin - Rapid-Fire Battle Cannon + Reaper Chaninsword + 2x Heavy Stubbers + Ironstorm Missle Pod

Knight Paladin - Rapid-Fire Battle Cannon + Reaper Chaninsword + 2x Heavy Stubbers + Ironstorm Missle Pod

Knight Warden - Avenger Gatling + Reaper Chanisword + Heavy Flamer + Heavy Stubber + Twin-Icarus Autocannon

This sits my list at exactly 2000 points, though I am wary of fielding such a low model count list as it can possibly be hit hard by the likes of deep-striking hammernators or genestealers. In addition, I will only have 3 Command Points, which could be extremely detrimental.

I am awaiting the rules to see how my Knight Castigator fared in transition from 7th to 8th, as I have always enjoyed running him, and he would seem to find a good home in a pure knight list.

I would very much enjoy to run some Vindicare w/ the list for the ability to snipe out characters and turn off the aura bubbles most provide, though I would have to include an HQ for the (Vanguard) formation to do so w/o sacrificing CP.

Let me know what you think.

General Discussion / A Missed Opportunity
« on: May 16, 2017, 10:31:15 AM »
It seems to me that GW has once again failed to follow their own fluff in a desire to play the short game. Fabius Bile has been experimenting with enhancing marines for the last 10 millenia, including extracting primarch samples, yet somehow was unable to crack the code while it seems Guilleman and Cawl had enacted a shark jumping plan around the same time.

This would have been a great opportunity for GW to introduce the new models as super Chaos shock troopers during the Fall of Cadia, forcing the Imperium to bio-engineer their own to compensate.

Now both Chaos and Imperials would have their own versions, and players would probably gobble up both sets, if not double-dip, and would allow a bit more testing in the upcoming set to see how well they operate, while also holding true to the fluff and the story progression.

Discussion: THE LIST / 1850 Raptors/Blood Angels
« on: October 01, 2016, 11:44:49 AM »
Combined Arms Detachment (Raptors)

HQ: Lias Issodon

Troops: 2 x 5 Man Tactical Squads (bare bones)

Heavy Support: 1 x 3 Man Centurion Devastator Squad (Grav-Cannon and Amp, Hurricane Bolter), Sergeant with Omniscope

Formation (Skyhammer Annihilation Force; either Raptors, Ultramarines or Star Phantoms)

2 x 5 man Assault Squads (Jump packs, 1 x eviscerator)
2 x 5 man Devastator Squads (Drop Pods w/ locator beacons, 2 x Grav-Cannon and Amp, 2 x Multi-Melta)

Formation (Archangels Orbital Intervention Force)

3 x 5 man Terminator Assault Squad (4 Thunder Hammer/Storm Shield, 1 pair Lightning Claws)

The idea is to infiltrate in Issodon and his 2 tactical and 1 Centurion squad at weak points with his guaranteed "Master of Ambush" warlord trait, using his locator beacon as needed to drop in the Skyhammer force and engage units. As the Raptors are a Raven Guard successor, all units have both Scout and Stealth on their first turn, with Issodon's squad also having permanent Shrouded.  Additionally, all Raptor bolters can be treated as Heavy 1 weapons with rending if they do not move that turn and Issodon automatically inflicts D6+3 WOUNDS at AP- on units (cannot snipe out Independent Characters however) or D3 Rolls on the Haywire table on a single vehicle after deployment but before the game begins.

This can potentially cripple a key unit or grant first blood even if going second.

The Archangel force will then be utilized as a hammer that can either come in off either the pods or Issodon himself, assaulting as soon as they arrive. Issodon can also provide shenanigans by granting re-rolls (either passed or failed) for your army and -1 to your opponents roll.

Overall I think it's fairly solid and fits the fluff of the Raptors quite well, as they are ambushers who call down troops at key locations to isolate and remove enemy forces.
