Discussion: Dark Angels / Re: What is the point of Cypher?

I'll certainly play him for fluff reasons against Dark Angels but it is disappointing that they don't add anything to the primary army.

I don't know enough about Eldar units to suggest any of those but a simple option is perhaps take a fortification that gives you an AA weapon, like a basic aegis defence line.

Discussion: Dark Angels / What is the point of Cypher?
« on: March 20, 2017, 07:31:26 AM »
Dropping this into this section as it does sort of deal with the Dark Angels, but please move if it would be better somewhere else.

A while back I bought the old metal Cypher model and a handful of Dark Angel veterans to be his Chosen, to go along with my Death Guard. Mainly because my nephew plays Dark Angels and I thought it would be nice and thematic to use him in our occasional games. However, looking over the rules from Gathering Storm 3 I can't see what Cypher and his Fallen have to bring to an army. Cypher is fun with his pistols but his abilities don't add to an army build and his Fallen don't have anything that you don't get from space marines or chaos marines. Outside the fluff element what is the point of playing him/them in an army? I'm sure I must be missing something.

If you haven't already, take a look at Traitor Legions. For any army built upon one of the legions it is a must and will go a good way to helping you out.

Definitely take them in a land raider. These days it's not worth trying to deep strike them.

Thanks, could you also give me a few ways to kit out both Terminators and Bikers?

Are bikes just better than Raptors?

Personally I prefer close combat terminators with pairs of lightning claws but that's because I find it works well.

As or bikes, remember that bikes give +1T so that gives Death Guard T6 bikers which coupled with FNP makes them awesome.

I'd expect another daemon Primarch first (my money on either Mortarion or Fulgrim) but I would expect either the Lion or Russ.

I'm missing the bikes to do that so I take a unit of Raptors for my Death Guard, and they have done well. But I would recommend bikes if you can do it.

Both of you can field him. Just think of it as a wrinkle in the Warp.

Since I started my Death Guard I've keep a small blog for the battles, which I try to make a little narrative.

A Fortress of Redemption I can understand as it's just such a huge model. Better used for scenery rather than something you bring to the table.

I've stopped bothering because flyers aren't as scary any more so I don't see the need to bring an Aegis line like I used to. Anything else seems pointless when games are about mobility these days.

Now that is a big difference. 2-3 is really going to tough to beat for anyone. I assumed he brought just the one.

Two things come to mind depending how much of a good sport your opponent is. Firstly, ask him to field just one for a change. Secondly, ask them for their advice on how to handle them. Just an idea.

I hadn't thought about detachments like that. I guess I sort of assumed that the way they are presented in Stronghold Assault (or whatever the book is called now) were formations.  :-[

I've noticed among my local group that we don't see fortifications being played any more. Last I saw was at the start of the year but before that it must have been at least six months or more since anyone played one. So I was pondering do you guys still play them or not? If not is it because they aren't considered worthwhile any more or more like myself, that points are too tight to fit them into a list?

how many Knights do they bring at that level ?

Ah. Sorry, I misread. I thought you had meant a combined Ork and Marine army. My bad.

Orks I will give you as having a really hard time bringing one down. I don't know enough about the Ork codex to give any suggestions there. I stand by what I say where marines are concerned though.
