Discussion: Dark Angels / What is the point of Cypher?

Dropping this into this section as it does sort of deal with the Dark Angels, but please move if it would be better somewhere else.

A while back I bought the old metal Cypher model and a handful of Dark Angel veterans to be his Chosen, to go along with my Death Guard. Mainly because my nephew plays Dark Angels and I thought it would be nice and thematic to use him in our occasional games. However, looking over the rules from Gathering Storm 3 I can't see what Cypher and his Fallen have to bring to an army. Cypher is fun with his pistols but his abilities don't add to an army build and his Fallen don't have anything that you don't get from space marines or chaos marines. Outside the fluff element what is the point of playing him/them in an army? I'm sure I must be missing something.

Discussion: Fortifications / A lack of fortifications on the table

I've noticed among my local group that we don't see fortifications being played any more. Last I saw was at the start of the year but before that it must have been at least six months or more since anyone played one. So I was pondering do you guys still play them or not? If not is it because they aren't considered worthwhile any more or more like myself, that points are too tight to fit them into a list?

Buffy fans will recognise that song. What does it have to do with a 40K blog? I'm glad you asked. The recent announcement that the game was getting it's first loyalist Primarch back has set the old internet forums going hell for leather again. Some of it positive as it should be but there is a lot of negativity that I feel isn't justified. The lyrics to this song are perfect for the current online atmosphere.

For more years than I can count there has been a huge push from the fan base to advance the storyline. Now at last we are getting somewhere. The Doomsday Clock is counting down the seconds to midnight. Cool things are happening and... everyone loses their minds. I was as shocked as anyone when Magnus the Red popped up and Fenris was all but wasted. I mean wow! We have a traitor Primarch and surely that meant that GW couldn't stop there. Which loyalist Primarch would make a return? Well, my money was on Leman Russ considering the whole Wulfen and Fenris business but no. Instead we get the fall of Cadia, the birth of an Eldar god and the Primarch of the Ultramarines returns! This is a great time to be a Warhammer 40K gamer. We are at last getting everything that we wanted.

So why is everyone so frightened that when 8th edition comes along that we'll be reduced to an Age of Sigmar type game or that the current universe will come crashing down and something new appear in it's place? GW have already said, and I have no reason to disbelieve them, that the game and the universe are not entering the "End Times". The problem is, in my opinion, that we have what we wanted but now fear of change and of the unknown is gripping people. I'm not a fan of change and I don't like new editions when they aren't necessary (and I don't consider GW making fresh cash every few years necessary for an edition change), but right now I am super excited for the game. These new characters, balanced super heavies and the direction that the game is going, is just going to make the game better. I recently said on a Facebook discussion that the universe has always been grim dark but now the game is becoming epic. Sorry, EPIC!

In the years to come god-like heroes and villains from all factions will stride the battlefields of the 41st millennium and it is going to make the game better, whether you are a competitive tournament player or a casual play at home with your mates type player. This isn't a time to be frightened for the future. It's time to embrace the game, reload that bolter under your bed, and claim the galaxy for yourself!

Discussion: Tournaments / Are tournaments even playing 40K?

This is a post that I made to a blog a few weeks ago. Posting here to get different opinions.

I run two invitational Warhammer 40K tournaments a year for my local players. I'm always looking at ways to make the events better and more appealing. After all, at some point I want to open up the events to more players at some point and make these events something good for the local region. I run the rules as written. If it is legal in a regular 40K game then it is legal for the tournament. Forge World units and rules equally suitable. But then these events are designed to be competitive. I want players to bring their best lists and their A game.

And that is where I find my current level of confusion and surprise. I keep looking online at other event's tournament rules and scenarios for inspiration. What I find surprises me. It looks like so many tweak the rules, changing rules, disallowing perfectly fine units and options, and using bland looking home-brew scenarios. It looks to me as though tournaments are not playing 40K but some strange hybrid of their own making. A tournament should be fun but competitive. I don't think players should not be penalized in army selection and the rule book missions are perfectly suitable for tournament play. Now I do prefer those missions which use the tactical objective cards and I can understand the point of view which says they are too random for tournament use but in the couple of occasions that they have been used for our tournaments they worked fine.

It's hard to balance these things and I guess I'll just keep looking and pondering ways to make our invitational events fun.

Prior to the release of Traitor Legions I had always run plague marines over regular chaos space marines. Mainly because it felt more fluffy but also because against most opponents the poisoned weapons were a great option. Along comes Traitor Legions and the new legion rules give everyone the same and better abilities, just without the poisoned weapons. Coupled with playing the Death Guard specific detachment a lot lately I've been  moving over to playing the chaos marines more. It is beginning to dawn on me that the legion rules are largely leaving plague marines to the side because with the basic marine squads you get heavy weapons and more options. You are just missing out on plague weapons.


40K Rules Questions / Fortification / LoW and Detachment Q

Are the Fortification and Lord of War slots only part of a Combined Arms detachment or can I include them when playing another detachment?

I tend to play the Death Guard Verticulum detachment but there seems to be no option to take a fortification or the opportunity to include my Chaos Knight.

The Midas Crusade.

A thousand years ago a valuable corner of the Imperium deep in the heart of the Ultima Segmentum vanished. Over the course of several days it was consumed by an expanding warp storm. No one escaped and any ships attempting to evacuate were never heard from again. The surrounding sectors suffered as they had to take up the slack of the Imperial tithes.
Now, on the cusp of the 42nd millennium the warp storm has begun to dissipate and the worlds of the Midas Sector are returning. The Imperium casts its eyes upon that region of space once again. The forces of Chaos are heavily entrenched already and waiting. The leaders of the Necron dynasties seek to recover relics from a fallen tomb world long forgotten, and alien eyes look upon these new worlds as targets to be destroyed or consumed!

I thought I might post this to help give others an idea for something they could do with their club or fellow players. For some time now I had been pondering how to run a campaign or league that would keep players interested, give them a reason to play, to challenge players...etc. Nothing seemed to work and then I had the idea of an open ended campaign (based on the Crusade of Fire idea) where the eight factions (Imperial, Chaos, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Tau Empire, Necron and Tyranids) could battle out within a realistic context.

It originally started out as just the Midas sector which held 10 worlds, all bar one being held by the forces of Chaos automatically at the start. Players could then if they wished pick a world to fight over, or leave it myself as the referee (most are happy for the latter but I get some ideas more about why they are fighting). Eventually we have opened up two more sectors to incorporate storyline elements and prevent everyone being clumped together.

The general concept/rules are simple:

1. Players can play any mission, codex or army. It doesn't matter. All games go towards the crusade. League games and friendlies are included.
2. Planets can have a mximum of 5 control points. When a player wins a battle on a planet they gain 1cp and the opponent loses 1. If the opponent wasn't a faction that already had territory, then the force that was there loses 1cp as the winner consoliates his or her position.
3. Death Worlds and the Daemon World can only be fought over if using the appropriate rules (Death Worlds were in a WD, and Daemon Worlds are in Crusade of Fire).
4. The referee then writes up the battle and outcomes as an in character/fluff, which I do on the blog link above.

This is how we handle a campaign and hopefully it will go on for years to come. Hopefully, it may be of some help in coming up with your own campaign ideas.
