Ideas on ways to organize tournament scoring?
« on: June 23, 2013, 10:11:31 PM »
I have organized a couple of small tournaments between my friends and have some questions about methods of scoring. How do your local tournaments score games. I've made a chart with the different missions and points are awarded based on how many victory points difference there is between the winning and losing armies and set them into a major/minor victory system and award bonus points for tabling your opponent. Every round we roll to see what mission and deployment we will play and everybody plays that type of mission.
For example 7 points major victory, 5 points minor victory, 3 points for a draw, 1 point for a minor loss and 0 for a major loss. Each mission has a different amount of victory points so I have a chart to distinguish between major/minor victories in each. I was thinking about throwing in bonus tournament points for things like having your Warlord survive every game, and killing the most enemy Warlords.
Are there any other bonuses you guys think would be good and fair to everybody? Also what kind of scoring do you have in your events?

Most tournaments i've played in the objective is rolled once for everyone you play 3 games & your total points are how many Victory points you get per round. most wins being the tie breaker of course, & after every round they try to put you with someone playing about as well as you.
                                                                          _         _
Alternativly you could play elimination bracket  _>---<_

or if you have a small group round robin is always feasible
round robin if you don't know is a tournament system where  everyone plays a game against  each opponent at least once it basiclly looks liek the allies matrix chart
i.e.
     P1/P2/P3/P4
P1 ---/W/L   /W
P2 L   /---/L /L
P3 W/ W/---/W
P4 L / W/ L/----

Sorry for my horrible formating

Play three games with the winner getting 0 points, a draw gets you 5 points, and a win gets you ten points. Tie breaker is then victory points, and a tie breaker on that is paint score, but the odds of that coming up are well very slim.

Also a win spot for best painted and best sportsmanship.

Any format is fine as long as all the player know ahead of time what the scoring system is so there are no surprises half way into the tournament.

I run mine like this each player starts with 10 points, this score is then modified by the VP difference in the game.

So 10+vp difference for the winner, 10-vp diff for the loser.

Scores are them capped at max of 20 for the winner and min of 0 for the loser.

I really like the book missions point system. And just add things up as people get them. Its a very uneven system but it really shakes things up.

In this order:

Relic or Emperors Will (low scoring)
Scouring (so random it shakes things up)
Big Guns
Purge the alien (to mitigate MSU)
Crusade

The problem with using straight VPs is this:

Relic or EW gets you ver few points so this mission really does not matter (What is max for one of these missions 9-10 VPs)

Scouring and big guns not the same VPS for all people but the max you can get is 21 VPs (kill 3 Fast/Heavies, and get objectives), throw in if you roll for objectives some tables will have 3 and some 5 for Big guns, so..some people will have the ability to get a 6 point advantage.

Purge: Terrible for this, So I beat a Draigowing list and get 5 Vps, you beat an MSu list and get 18....

Essentially depending on matchups it is possible for someone to get so far ahead winning games does not matter.

The other issue is most events don't have 6 rounds.

If I were doing a VP tournament I would only run Emperors will, Relic and Crusade(5 objectives), because the other missions are not balanced as far as VP collection goes.

I've never run a tournament but when running a league we stick to the football/soccer type system of 3pts for a win, 1pt each for a draw, and 0pt for a loss.

I like the idea of just using standard VPs because it makes it easier for everyone to understand. I was going to use table quarters every mission also, and I was thinking about changing the Purge the Alien scoring to 1VP for every 200 pts killed instead of for each unit.
