vanguard veterans build question
« on: April 25, 2014, 05:02:22 PM »
Hay I'm building a squad of vanguard vets and I'm wondering if I should go all in and make them a 245pt squad or just keep them cheap and add a few special weapons , I don't play much and never play competitive lol thanks

I was thinking
1-thunder hammer
2-storm shields
1-power sword
1-power fist
1-pair of lightning claws
1-plasma pistol
With jump packs
=245pts

I'd say take 2 hammers rather then the hammer and then fist. Might as well take tha hammer instead. What's tha 5 pts If ur guna take tha fist an go last neway. Besides wit dual hammers u get an extra atk. Not competitive at all. But It's super dope. An take tha relic blade on ur sgt too. Jus my opinion tho

well, I'm curious. What chapter tactics do you want to play em with? What kinds of things do you want them to kill? Light infantry or heavy infantry? vehicles? monstrous creatures?
Don't try making a unit unkillable. its a waste of time and the dice gods laugh at you for wasting your time. Dedicate a unit to a job and make sure it does it til it's either dead or running.

I was thinking raven guard chapter tactics and putting them with shrike kinda as his body guard and having them take on monstrous creatures and heavy infantry. They would be just a fun unit but I have a feeling ill go to far on points

They are def a point sink unit. But If that's ur target my opinion is a storm shield and hammer on all. Relic blade and shield on tha sgt.
Points get wild start dropping shields but try to keep one on the sgt. Let em tank tha hits for shrike. Use hammers in cc and gains any heavy targets. Let the relic blade take challenges and strike is mostly safe. But for the points ur not guna hav and gains big unit of guys. If u can mayb make a specialist or 2 then hav alot pa reg vanguard guys to make up some more mass In the unit. If not then jus be careful who u let see em. They will go dwn to massed shots. Quicker then termies too. Once kitted out they are jus as expensive wit no 2 up armor. . .

If you aren't concerned with point efficiency and don't intend to be competitive with them, then just make them look cool. Personally I tend to kit all key veterans out differently, as I view them as individual warriors whose wargear reflect their preferred fighting style. My crew of blood angels vanguard vets are kitted out as gunslingers, all toting a different set of pistols. Total point sink, but damn if the don't look cool.

If points don't matter anymore, give em 3 thunderhammers and shields and two with lightning claws. Nice and versatile

if you're gonna sink points into em and you want versatility, 5 guys, each with jump pack, claw, and fist. 360 pts.

ive ran into the same problem can not decide what I want to do.  Have you though about magnetizing a few of them so you can change depending on if its casual or time to throw down?  There are several tutorials on the net and it really is easy/fun to be able to change and make them the way that you want.  Just something to think about.  My death co I cant decide, is it more painting of parts... yes but I get what I want.

I don't like Shrike, he just doesn't do much. I don't see the tactical advantage of infiltrating your assault troop. They can't assault any earlier anyways.
Raven guard let's you use your Jump Packs in the movement and assault face so you have quite some threat range.

I prefer just jumping them behind a set of scout moved rhinos with tactical marines. They stay out of sight and pounce turn two. Oh and having an ADL at the middle of the board means those Rhinos has a 4+ cover save.

What to give them as options? Well they are expensive, but have a lot of attacks. It really depends on what you are going to do. I would suggest havign a Relic Blade and Shield on the Stg, that should allow him to survive some challenges, and keeping your HQ free to kill hordes. (Or just don't give the Stg anything and have him be sacrificial, but that would be unfluffy!
