Dark Eldar 70 Game Journey
« on: July 05, 2014, 04:04:31 PM »
To sum up my 70-game trip with DE I would like to publish statistics of using each an every unit in my army, from the most popular Kabalite Trueborn (used them in 63 of the 70 battles) up to least popular Maugan Ra (used him only once in 70 games). I wonder if you use the same units more or less often?

How about some actual thoughts on the units?
Everything I have ever told you, even this, is a lie.

Ok ShadowcatX. For me the most important units in DE codex are the ones that can address the biggest weaknesses of the army:
1. No Fearless.
2. Squishy toughness 3.
3. No Ignores Cover.
4. Paying through the nose. Most DE units have to pay more points for the same things other armies (especially codex: Eldar) get cheaper.

Solutions:

Ad.1.  Vehicles give your units Fearless. Embark on Venoms & Raiders.
Ad.2. AV 10 Vehicles give your units the equivalent of Toughness 6. Mo’ Venoms, mo’ Raiders.
Ad. 3. Melee weapons effectively Ignore Cover – Haywire Wyches Here we go! Farwell to Nurgle Soulgrinders & Wave Serpents.
Ad. 4. Even in a pricey codex one might find a better bargain: Trueborn. 3 Kabalite Trueborn & 2 Splinter Cannons are the most effective to spit 12 poisoned shots at a 36’’ range. Also have access to cheap haywire.

Right now I’m even thinking of omitting the mandatory Ravagers for more Wyches with Haywire.

These are my top tier units I can give you today but if you want I might review some others.

What HQ did you find served you best? How did you use it?

Venom vs Raider?

Was your experience with beast packs that bad because they look really solid?

How'd you use the imperial bastion? Aegis defense line?

You used rangers more often than craftworld eldar, so I'm guessing you used them with corsairs as well. Why? What did they bring to the table?
Everything I have ever told you, even this, is a lie.

All DE HQ’s are a Close Combat addition to a shooty army in a shooty edition. The Haemonculi serve me the best as they are the cheapest + they give nice buffs to units, especially when taking multiple Detachments.

Venoms vs Raiders? I’ll show you my list for the next 1850 tournament:

5xVenoms with 5 Units of 3 Trueborn with dual S.Cannons and Haywire
4x OS Venoms with 4 units of 3 Maelstrom Objective collecting Wracks
6x OS Raiders (half of them have Enchanced Aethersails) with Disintegrator Cannons with 6 units of 5 Wyches with Haywire
2xHaemonculi inside one of the Wracks’ Venoms (3 pain tokens)

No expert in beastpacks. I don’t like proxying the Khymerae and up till now I have only 4 finecast ones. But Sean Nayden’s tournament-winning 1850 list presented on The Torrent of Fire website looks really promising:

Asdrubael Vect
Baron Sathonyx
Karandras
14 Wyches, Hekatrix, Haywire
14 Wyches, Hekatrix, Haywire
5 Beastmasters, 20 Khymerae, 2 Razorwing Flocks
5 Beastmasters, 20 Khymerae, 2 Razorwing Flocks
3 Windrider Jetbikes
3 Windrider Jetbikes
7 Warp Spiders

Fortifications in 7th got 2 nerfs: Quad-gun/Icarus can only snap shot at ground targets & you cannot deploy your aegis outside your deployment zone.

On the other hand Stronghold Assault additions incorporated into the new rulebook give some new possibilities. Now bastion is a AV14 4 HP  scoring unit. You can buy a single Void Shield (AV12) upgrade to protect the guys on top and inside from Helldrake flamers & such.

The Bastion is a good home for the Eldar Dark Reapers. A unit of 5 reapers with exarch shoots 6 S8AP3 shots at 48 range, with the ability to Ignore Jinks of Annihilation Barges & Wave Serpents or shred Marines with 11 S5AP3 shots. You can buy’em an Ammo Store upgrade for the bastion which gives the unit inside re-rolling ones to hit (and the exarch has BS5).
The Bastion is too expensive though, that’s why I’m thinking of buying the Wall of Martyr’s: Imperial Bunker – same stats, 20 points cheaper.

I used Rangers every time I used Eldar allies (necessary troop tax). But the HQ’s/HS/Elite slots varied that’s why it seems I used Rangers more often than other Eldar. I know that Eldar jetbikes, Dire Avengers or Wraithguard in Serpents are far more competitive options but Rangers look cool, whereas I still cannot accept the aesthetics of Serpents & Windrider Jetbikes. But switching aside aesthetics – Windriders are cheaper & better option for your allied Troops slot to be able to field Dark Reapers.

That's an incredibly tight list, very impressive. Is it safe to say you believe you will see a lot of vehicles?

Karandras
14 Wyches, Hekatrix, Haywire
14 Wyches, Hekatrix, Haywire

3 Windrider Jetbikes
3 Windrider Jetbikes
7 Warp Spiders

This looks more like a fun list. Foot slogging witches? Who does that. (People that have 40 Khymerae on the field, that's who.) I'd guess Karandras would outflank with one of the beast squads while the other ran up the table accompanied by 2 units of witches? Wouldn't vect slow down the beast pack (since he's infantry)? If so he probably ran with the witches as well, seems odd for the supreme archon to be running around with witches. . .
Everything I have ever told you, even this, is a lie.

Thanks.

In 7ed we will all see a lot of vehicles. Apart from them - Grey Knights - that's why I chose to take 6 Dissintegrator Cannons on Raiders.

I don't know S. Nayden's tactics, but suppose Karandras is there for Infiltrate rather than Outflank. With Baron +1 roll help to begin or Vect 4+ stealing the initiative, Karandras Infiltrate enables DE player to land with a death star unit inside the opponent's deployments zone turn 1 and drag his attention, while the other beastpack & wyches sneak forward unnoticed.

I also think that Vect's 6'' movement is too slow for 12'' beastpack (Same with Karandras), but on the other hand Khymarae/Razorwings  move on large 40mm bases. Taking 22 of them means that whole lot of models will take place in the 2nd and 3rd row so that the slower IC's can catch upon them. Furthermore both of the characters give Fearless - a priceless gift for all DE, especially Beastpacks.

I'm afraid that GW also would not approve the Supreme Overlord of Commoragh "running around" with Wyches any more. When the new dex hits the market this Autumn, there's a high risk they will Squat him along with all other no-GW-model characters: Duke Sliscus, Lady Malys, Baron Sathonyx and Kheradruakh the Forgotten. My Hobbit Thranduil, King of Mirkwood who serves as Vect will have to end up on the shelf.

Isn't the whole adding an IC to a unit to give them infiltrate HIGHLY debated? Seems like something a tourny wouldn't care for.

I have been out of the game for quite a while (since very early 5th edition) and am just getting back in, probably in a garage play format more than anything so I don't really have any idea what the meta is or what is coming.

After playing another 70 games through the last year I would like to publish updated statistics of my army and share with you a couple reflections about the road from fielding throngs of Kabalite Warriors & Trueborn to running Harlequins & Grotesques.

7ed made everything more versatile. Times of 1 source armies seem to be long gone. Like Skari who started playing Imperial Guard in 7thed I tried to run a Space Wolf Thunderwolf complete-oposite to Dark Eldar army. But my greatest discovery were the Harlequins. Harlequin's Caresses everywhere+Invisible/Shrouded Glaive biker mob+Psychic Shrieking Shadowseers proved that they are a far more powerful army than most of the 40k community thinks. Adding Dark Eldar Grotesquerie gives the Shadowseers some cool beefy bodyguards + Freakish Spectacle helps with Psychic Shrieking all the way. I had so much fun with all those armies & units with the exeption to Eldar. After the new Scatterbike Codex came out I just stopped fielding Eldar even as a small allied force to DE. I like to play against Eldar and Psychic Shriek/Caress their Wraithknights to oblivion but I don't want to use them on my side.
I'm really looking forward for some new DE release, but I would also like to know your opinion did 7th ed DE codex made you buy into other armies than Commorites?

Thanks for the info. I have been occupied with other armies but have been looking into Harlequins and Dark Eldar as the sleeper army.  I'll have to make the time to play test but I am initial leaning towards two Scarlet Epicureans with a Masque, or something along those lines. I will probably have Eldar for banshees to deny overwatch.
