1000 Point Astra Militarum List, what could I add next?
« on: October 01, 2016, 07:43:51 AM »
So here is my 1000 point Moonstriders list, and I was wondering where potential improvements could be made, and what would be an effective investment for future purchases.

Any help is always appreciated  ;D

HQ:

Company Command Squad: Vox Caster, Flamer, Astropath, Chimera

Troops:

Infantry Platoon

Platoon Command Squad: Vox Caster, Flamer

Infantry Squad: Vox Caster, Flamer, Commissar

Infantry Squad: Flamer

Heavy Weapons Squad: Autocannons

Infantry Platoon

Platoon Command Squad: Flamer, Vox Caster

Infantry Squad: Vox Caster, Flamer

Infantry Squad: Vox Caster, Flamer, Chimera w/ two H Flamers

Heavy Weapons Squad: Autocannons

Heavy Support:

Leman Russ Battle Tank

Leman Russ Battle Tank

1000 Points

The current battle plan

The Company Command Squad zooms around in their Chimera and hands out orders such as the tank hunters/ ignores cover to the autocannons, potentially giving out some psychic powers as well if the situation arises where that can be useful.

The first platoon blobs up and takes out enemy infantry with rank fire from the platoon command squad. The flamers hopefully providing a deterrent from chargers.
The second platoon's chimera races about claiming neutral objectives or flushing out weak troops from backfield objectives with it's flamers. The spare infantry squad and platoon command guard either a home objective or provide a speed bump for enemy troops.
The Autocannons shoot at enemy vehicles hoping to glance them to death with the aid of the commander's orders.

Meanwhile the two Battle Tanks shoot enemy infantry while rolling up the field or hanging back, and use their AV 14 front armour to keep themselves safe.

Again any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

I don't play guard but I have a friend who does. It looks like you have all the basics covered. I would get something fun and hard-hitting. I think if I was facing your army I would try and take out that chimera first. So get yourself something that is threatening, distractingand that comes in close, I'm thinking a hellhound or something. Usually when I build a list, after about -750-1000 points I want to start adding redundancy. So, for example, if my infantry-killing unit gets rocked I have something else to replace it. The hellhound can threaten anything, it just depends how you build it (I forget what it's called, but there is the one with a meltacannon) and I am pretty sure it counts as a fast vehicle. Or a group of scions would be cool to help deal with heavy armored troops. You could also always get one of the other leman russ variants that is specialized at something(try and go for one with rear armor 11). Oh and if you can afford it, try and give camo netting to that chimera; it needs all the protection it can get and it is not getting it from side armor 10.

There are a lot of options out there for you. I would not recommend one unit because it depends on how you want to play. As I said, I would just recommend getting something that punches hard or is seen as a serious threat.

Hope this helps bud, happy building!

Thank you a lot for the suggestion!

I was looking at a Hellhound, perhaps the one with the Chem Cannon or the standard Hellhound? I like the idea of complimenting my infantry killing power with another infantry killer.
Another option you mentioned was a Leman Russ. How does the Eradicator sound? I like how cheap it is and how it ignores cover; plus it's 36" range forces it to move up and make itself a threat. However it does not have rear armour 11 :(
I will carry on thinking about it, again thank you :)

The eradicator looks VERY cool! I haven't seen it in practice but what is not to like about a S6 large blast that ignores cover. This thing sounds like it wrecks light infantry. Strap on as many heavy bolters as you can (I think its 3) and you have an infantry chewing beast! I just checked, you get the heavy bolter on the front for free and then it's 20 points for the sponsons (worth it!) making the whole thing 140 points before any upgrades. I think this guy is a good call.

BUT I would still try to grab something that will take care of heavy armor. As it stands you have the autocannons that can hurt light armor and your 2 leman russ battle cannons. They are good, don't get me wrong, but I would try and find some more high strength shooting. If anyone brings anything with armor 13 or 14 you will have a VERY hard time getting rid of it. Maybe take a a leman russ demolisher or a Vendetta gunship(this would get you 3 twinlinked lascannons AND a flyer that can transport a specialist squad...say with melta guns).

I do like the idea of the Eradicator :D however I suppose it's anti- horde abilities are covered by the mass of flamers and chimera Heavy Flamers, the high strength shooting sounds like a good call.

The only truck I have with high strength shooting is where to find it. I really like the heavy weapons teams, however with their Ballistic skill of 3 lascannons seem like a waste. I do generally but the Tank Hunters order on them, but that is inconsistent with their LD7, making them as you say ineffective against AV 13/14

The Demolisher and the Vanquisher are alternatives. I'm not keen on the Vanquisher because of BS3, and a tank commander is an extra 40 points. The Demolisher sounds like a good idea for a cure-all, and can reliably punch through AV14 with it's ordnance. that said it is very expensive now at 170 points  :-[
The Vendetta seems like the best idea for the twin-linked lascannons which will reliably hit and kill stuff. Also it will be great for line-breaker. Yay! The only question is what to use the transport capacity for? I could put the second grounded Infantry Squad into it, but then I have a Platoon command Squad sitting there with nothing to command. I could also swap it for the Heavy Flamer Chimera.

Another option could be to run a veteran squad with lascannon and camo cloaks? Then I have a resilient lascannon with BS4 for 90 points, plus Objective Secured. What do you think?
Also sentinels could be a cheap armour killer, however I have never used them or seen them at all. Any thoughts?
And finally the Devil Dog gives a resilient tank with a decent weapon, but for 135 points... eh? I guess it is a fast tank but it still seems way too heavily priced. The Eldar have a Falcon for 125 points with an arguably better weapon for tank busting.

The demolisher is a little steep at 170, but it can take a beating. Almost nothing is going to mess with your front armor and you do have rear armor 11, which is something.
The Vendetta seems like the best call at this point. 3 twin-linked lascannons. Put a squad of tempestus scions in there. They are very good at shooting stuff. They have BS4 and a Scion command squad can use 4 special weapons (ie 4 melta guns to drop in and --- up a tank). I realise that this gets even more expensive but it is a VERY realiable anti-tank set-up.
I would alternatively try to load up a distraction squad in the vendetta (this is only really useful in about 1500pts or higher) drop them in and shoot at something. They basically take the attention away from your other units and maybe kill something in the process. So if you want to take a unit make them veeery minimally upgraded. A special weapon squad with a flamers and grenade launchers (45 points) or you could give them the meltas and hope they pop something (60 points).
I know the way you feel about the veterans with a lascannon. Unfortunately, it's just not worth it. You have a lascannon that is a little more accurate and survivable but the other guys in the squad don't do anything.

As for sentinels...I am not sure. I would keep them in cover and give them camo netting and have them pop out and blast things. But they are only one shot and BS3.

At 145 points you can get a devil dog with another multi-melta. It's a little pricey. One thing my friend used to use was a chimera with melta veterans inside to ride around and shoot tanks. It's pretty cheap and the chimera can shoot at other things (probably infantry). This is a sort of ground variation to the vendetta with scions.

Some of these things you may just have to try and see. Good luck and happy tank hunting!

perhaps a baneblade and an aegis defence line and quad gun will be of interest to you to make up 1850 or near enough without killing your bank account
