Title: Spliting Tactical squads
Post by: Spudork on March 03, 2017, 02:22:33 PM
I am just starting WH 40k. I am planning on buying the space marine start collecting box and was curious if I could split the 10 man tactical squad into two 5 man squads and still put one heavy weapon and one specialist weapon in each squad. Can I even split them in the first place?

You can split the squads, but not in the way you're thinking.  So the rule is Combat Squads, and you take your built ten man squad to the table and when you deploy them, you declare that they are Combat Squading into two groups of five and you choose which models go in which group.  We'll just call them Group A and B for this example.  So Group A can have your Sergeant, Special Weapon and Heavy Weapon with two normal Bolters while Group B has just five bog standard Bolters.  Group A can have your Heavy and Special and Group B has your Sergeant, or any combination you choose.  But the key point is that you do this after your army has been made and is about to be put on the table, so you can't go back and buy additional weapons.  An upside though is that the two groups can share a single Transport, even though Transports are limited to only one Unit at a time.  So each group is a separate Unit in every way except with Transports.
