General Discussion / Here Come the Golden Bananas!!
« on: January 09, 2018, 09:53:18 AM »
Is anyone else excited about the upcoming Custodes codex? I'm not certain how they may fare in the current 40K setting but nearly all the models look fantastic, so at the very least they will probably wind up being a passion project. My hopes are high that the new codex might be able to do justice to the "Best of the Best", but not going overboard on codex creep while also having at least some semblance of viability.

Any thoughts on the upcoming banana-rama?

Discussion: THE LIST / 2000 Point Baneblade List
« on: November 24, 2017, 10:41:27 AM »
So I've been wanting to field my baneblades for a while now as I love the models but I'm not sure if the list I've constructed so far is a viable one. I have spent the time to magnetize every one of the models so that I can field any non-FW variant because $30 in magnets and some extra time IMO is well worth spending instead of the $150US+ per baneblade kit. Anyway, here is the list I've come up with and would enjoy any feedback you all can provide:

Super Heavy Detachment (Cadian)

Lord of War
Banehammer: (Tremor Cannon; Twin heavy bolter; 2x Lascannons; 2x Twin heavy bolters) 472pts
Shadowsword: (Volcano Cannon; Twin heavy bolter; 2x Lascannons; 2x Twin heavy bolters) 472pts
Stormlord: (Vulcan Mega-bolter; 2x Heavy stubber; Twin heavy bolter; Pintle storm bolter;
2x Lascannons; 2x Twin heavy bolters) 522pts

Spearhead Detachment (Cadian)

Company commander: Chainsword, Las-pistol; Kurov's Aquila relic 30pts
Lord Castellan Creed: 2x Hot-shot laspistols; Power Sword 70pts

Astropath: Las-pistol (Psychic Barrier) 15pts

Heavy Support
Heavy weapons squad: 3x Mortars 33pts
Heavy weapons squad: 3x Mortars 33pts
Heavy weapons squad: 3x Mortars 33pts
Heavy weapons squad: 3x Mortars 33pts
Heavy weapons squad: 3x Mortars 33pts
Heavy weapons squad: 3x Lascannons 78pts

Supreme Command Detachment (Cadian)

Company commander: Chainsword; las-pistol; Relic of Lost Cadia 30pts
Company commander: Chainsword; Las-pistol 30pts
Company commander: Chainsword; Las-pistol 30pts
Tech-priest enginseer (Mars): Omnissian axe; servo arm 52 pts
Tech-priest enginseer (Mars): Omnissian axe; servo arm 52 pts

Astropath: Laspistol; (Nightshroud) 15pts

With the Banehammer and Storlard both offering transport capacity, I was planning on filling them with all the infantry units as they can still shoot from the firing decks. One enginseer would also embark upon these to provide repairs each turn. Certainly there are not a lot of units, but none of the baneblades can be tied up in combat due to the "Steel Behemoth" rule, and between the three of them and their passengers there seems to be a versatile mix of high-yield weaponry, as well as sheer target saturation. Overall the list hits 2000 points on the nose, at a 111PL with 10CP as Creed will be the warlord, providing the list with 2 bonus CP. Now I will have to sacrifice one of those CP to provide the additional relic, but I believe that will be a fair exchange, especially if I can roll hot with the Aquila relic and bring back some CP over the course of the game.

I would like to know what everyone thinks; total garbage, neck-beardy, balanced, whatever it is I'm completely open to your ideas.

Thanks again,

Have you thought of substituting the Exocrines for 3 units of 3 Hive Guard? I know it's a drop in toughness and wounds, but it would allow you the option of fielding an additional threat that would have to be chewed through for the same 432 pts you would pay for 2 Exos and would allow you to target units out of LOS @36" if you choose the Impaler cannon which means you will nearly always have the chance to shoot at something and whittling down threats.

Even so, it looks like a pretty solid list.

Have you considered swapping out the RG captain for Lias Issodon of the Raptors (a Chapter Master of a Raven Guard successor as well). He and his group get all the benefits of the RG but Lias also would allow you to FREELY infiltrate 3 Raptors infantry squads and himself so long as they are non-terminator, primaris or centurions.

Points would probably need some adjusting, since Lias is pretty pricey at 195 pts, but you do have 15 points left, so a few dropped conscripts might do it.

Plus, the Raptors regularly utilize AM in operations, so no one can really fault you for being non-fluffy, save mainly for the wolves, but they could be Raptors chapter hunting hounds or something.

Overall, it looks pretty dang solid; a tad heavy on conscripts to my taste since they did get downgraded in the last codex, but they do make for excellent bubblewrap.

Glad to hear you had a good result and apparently a good time, which is far more important IMO. Question tho: Did "A Tide of Traitors" strategem for the cultists come into play, or was it not really needed or applicable?

Congrats again!

I am just more disappointed in GW not seeming to put in any real effort into designing a new model for which players, or just collectors should be excited.

Plus, the notice of many different individuals that the model is eerily similar to the Halo Scorpion tank puts GW in definite risk of a much larger company coming down on them for potential IP theft just as GW did several years ago with Chapterhouse.

I...I have words. But they are words that are so salty about this piece of formed garbage, that they are perhaps best not suited to this this forum.

All I can say is that if GW believes it is a "modelling" company first and foremost, they need to get rid of the slap-dash creators of this travesty, and install some people with actual artistic vision. Kit-bashing is cool, and an integral  and respected part of the hobby, but it's something I envision more with Orks than Space Marines, especially since the return of the RowBoat.

Maybe the rules will make it desirable, but IMHO it just looks like a hack-job bit of steaming goat-s&%#@. I would love to be able to smash together a Repulsor and a Sicaran just to say "job's done" and then collect a paycheck.

GW, you have a magnificent amount of ideas to draw from... Don't be the tabletop version of  Electronic Arts or Ubisoft.

My hat is off to you for one thing GW; you made an amazing base for a Battle Wagon... too bad people were doing it nearly a decade ago you out of touch hacks....

Looks like a pretty solid list, but you may wish to consider a few slight alterations IMHO.

I would drop the power sword on the lord and just go with a basic chainsword which can be upgraded to the AL relic "Blade of the Hydra". You lose 1 AP but gain +1 strength, +d3 attacks and a flat 2 damage. You would save 4pts from the sword, and gain some extra damage and attacks that might trigger "Death to the False Emperor" if going against Imperium.

If the berserkers are going to infiltrate or run up the field, you might wish to just outfit them with chainaxes and chainswords as they are best suited in CC and the extra attack could prove more useful in the long run while also not potentially stalling a charge by removing close models with pistol fire.

The sorc in termy armor seems a bit out of place, as he has no real protection to speak of if deep-striking barring the invul save. If he's going to be sitting back w/ the havocs, you might want to just take him plain and save the points to use elsewhere.

Discussion: Adeptus Mechanicus / Looking to Start an Ad Mech Army
« on: September 28, 2017, 09:51:08 AM »
Greetings followers of the Machine God! I have been looking into starting up an Ad Mech army since last edition, but have never been able to commit to doing so. However, with the new codex having recently dropped my desire seems to have been renewed. I have been toying around w/ the idea of running a pure Mars Brigade force (since that allows me to field Cawl) as well as the nice 12 total re-rolls, but I am uncertain if the list I've come up with would be a viable one. Here is what I was thinking:

Mars Brigade (+9CP)

Cawl - Warlord
Enginseer - Autocaduceus of Arkhan Land; O. Axe; Servo-Arm
Enginseer - O. Axe; Servo-Arm

2 Rangers + 2 Rangers w/ Arquebii + 1 Ranger Alpha w/ Omnispex
2 Rangers + 2 Rangers w/ Arquebii + 1 Ranger Alpha w/ Omnispex
5 Vanguard + 1 Vanguard Alpha w/ Taser Goad + Omnispex
5 Vanguard + 1 Vanguard Alpha w/ Taser Goad + Omnispex
5 Vanguard + 1 Vanguard Alpha w/ Taser Goad + Omnispex
5 Vanguard + 1 Vanguard Alpha w/ Taser Goad + Omnispex

Cybernetica Datasmith - Gamma pistol; power fist
4 Infiltrators (Flechette blasters + taser goads) + Infiltrator Princeps ( F. blaster + T. goad)
4 Infiltrators (Flechette blasters + taser goads) + Infiltrator Princeps ( F. blaster + T. goad)

Fast Attack
Sydonian Dragoon (Taser lance)
Sydonian Dragoon (Taser lance)
2 Sydonian Dragoons (Taser lances)

Heavy Support
3 Kastelan Robots ( Heavy phosphor on all hard points)
Dunecrawler - Icarus Array; Cognis stubber; Data-tether
Dunecrawler - Icarus Array; Cognis stubber; Data-tether

This tags the list at exactly 2000 points and 122PL, which seems decent on paper, but again I'm not an Ad Mech player and am not super certain about how viable/competitive this list might be with hordes running roughshod, so if anyone has any input it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys, Sindri

The next 3 codices to be released after AdMech will be Tyranids, Eldar, and Astra Militarum.

General Discussion / Re: Off-Topic (not wargaming): Youtube - WTF?!
« on: September 09, 2017, 07:10:31 PM »
I'm curious as to the precise reason for getting tagged for ToS violation(s), as there has never been anything I've seen on any of Fritz's videos over the years that would seem to place his channel in jeopardy. If it's an update on the bots, then it's most likely a series of copyright strikes, and I do not recall any copyright material being utilized in any v-log since they are almost all still images.

However, there exists the outside possibility that someone issued a set of DMCA take-downs for no reason other than spite, which are unable to be appealed per my knowledge, though I would wonder who would be that vindictive.

At this point all we can do is wait and see how the situation develops. Hopefully it will all work out for Fritz in the end.

General Discussion / Re: Getting back into 40k

Glad to hear about your interest in getting back into the hobby Sever!

Currently you would need both the 8th rulebook which is $60 on the GW site, but you can get it bundled in with the "Dark Imperium" box-set which has 53 models (both Imperial and Chaos) for $160. Outside of that if you are going loyalist Space Marine you would need the Codex: Adeptus Astartes, with the caveat that if you plan to play Blood Angels, Dark Angels or Space Wolves they are supposed to receive their own separate codices, as they deviate significantly in certain aspects.

It should also be noted that due to some of the changes in how structuring lists operates currently, you could also purchase the (Index: Imperium) books if you wish to put in Guard or Sisters, but those seem to be more as placeholders until they receive their own books, so you might wish to save your hobby-dollars until confirmation is provided by GW.

In summary, you would only need 2 books to field the majority of Space Marine chapters, but do be aware that GW has been very aggressive in launching new FAQ's, model lines and books over the last 6-9 months so things may change quickly, though now that the flagship Astartes have their own book they should be solid for a time.

Hope this was helpful,

General Discussion / A Kickstarter That Might Interest Gamers
« on: August 29, 2017, 12:41:38 PM »
Gamers, a new Kickstarter has been unveiled that may tempt you to spend your hard earned hobby dollars. If you listen to BoLS "Forge the Narrative" podcast, you may already be aware of the project, but it is for a modular gaming table that has been designed for wargaming, RPG'ing, heck even board and card gaming.
Now I don't have a dog in this fight, but with Kickstarters having a specific timeline and this one having 30 days remaining, I wanted to inform people in case they were unaware but would have been interested.

Here is the link to the "Table of Ultimate Gaming":

Cheers, Sindri
