How would you run blood angels now in 8th?
« on: July 11, 2017, 08:17:56 AM »
I'm 20-ish games, mostly 1000-1500 points, into 8th edition now and have completely revised my thoughts on how 8th would play out.

Making assault armies that aren't horde variants (orcs, tyrannies) viable seems hard to me. In all my games the shooty elements of my list have done all the heavy lifting. This disturbs me to no end as I didn't choose to play blood angels back in 3rd to be some back field bullet slinger but feel more and more shoehorned into that play style.

How would you run Blood angels now in 8th? I think I need an entirely new angle.

I'm 10 games in and feel exactly the same way. Assault is a mixed bag. It's much easier to get into combat and you can move more freely now and stop multiple units from shooting easier. But if you want things to die in the assault phase you need to invest more. Thats why horde armies do so well, they gain a larger benefit of just disrupting other shooting units as they are more expendable when opponent falls back and returns fire.

Cover saves are much harder to get for non infantry units in 8th as well, making long range shooting support much more effective. Make sure you have enough terrain and los blocks to keep the game more dynamic!

I play a themed army consisting of lots of Death Company. I'm not sure how to get the most out of my unit selection though... Any help is appreciated, going to be fighting some Tyranids soon, my friend is starting an army. Maybe this will help you? (I know I can't field everything in a 2000 point game)

HQ's - Captain, Lemartes/Chaplin
Troops- 30 Tactical Marines, one squad has a flamer, one has missile launcher, one has meltagun (yes 8 bolters in each)
Elites- 30 Death Company Marines, all have Jump Packs, all have Bolt Pistol Chainsword.
5 shooty Terminators (without assault cannon, so sad)
1 Death Company Dreadnought with Blood Talons
Heavy Support- 2 Vindicators
2 Baal Predators, both with Flamestorm Cannons and Heavy Flamers (unless these should be in the fast category?)
Dedicated Transport - 2 Rhinos
                                1 Drop Pod

I've been running my old 7th list with some very slight tweaks and it's not worked out at all. Here's the list:

2000p Batallion detachment

HQ

Sanguinor

Sanguinary priest (jump pack, thunder hammer)

Troops

10 tacticals (SGT combi-melta+chainsword, melta, heavy flamer) Dedicated Rhino

10 tacticals (SGT combi-melta+chainsword, melta, heavy flamer) Dedicated Rhino

5 close combat scouts

Elites

4 Sanguinary guards (angelus bolters, 3x swords, 1x axe)

5 Sanguinary guards (plasma pistols, 3x swords, 2x axes)

Sanguinary ancient (angelus, sword)

Fast

3 bikes (combi-grav, 2x grav)

3 bikes (combi-grav, 2x grav)

Heavy

Predator (autocannon, las sponsons)

Vindicator

Some lessons I've learned so far:

Vindicators barely ever achieve anything, even when ignored by my enemy.

Tacticals are only worth it because of their weapon options and mustn't ever get into close combat where they are utterly useless. Are easily nullified and have poor range.

Sanguinary guards lack weight of attacks and the new rend system makes them much more vulnerable despite having 2 wounds each. The lack of attacks goes for pretty much every close combat unit... Deepstriking is also barely ever a viable tactic in my experience.

Characters die so easily. Especially to psykers...

Just translated my old 1500p list into a 2000p list for 8th Edition with a few additions of course, looking like this:
(Basically added Lemartes & Melta Assault squad, scouts got shotguns)
2000p Batallion detachment
HQ:
Lemartes
Librarian Dreadnought - Meltagun
Standard:
5x Scouts - Shotguns, PowerAxe Sarge
5x Tactical Marines - Hvy Flamer, Power Axe Sarge
5x Tactical Marines - Hvy Flamer, Power Axe Sarge
Dedicated Transport:
Razorback - Twin Assault Cannon, Storm Bolter
Razorback - Twin Assault Cannon, Storm Bolter
Elites:
8x Death Company - Jump Packs, 1 Power Fist, 1 Thunder Hammer, 2 Power Axes
5x Sanguinary Guard - 5Plasma Pistols, 2x Axes, 2x Death Masks
Fast Attack:
5x AssaultMarines - Jump Packs, 2x Meltagun, Power Axe & Meltabomb Sarge
Heavy Support:
Predator - Autocannon, Lascannon Sponsons
Vindicator
Flyer:
Stormraven Gunship - Twin MultiMelta, Twin Assault Cannon, two Hurricane Bolters

It's pretty shooty for BA i guess. Jumpers go in Reserve, Dread & Scouts into Raven, so only Armour on the Board at the start.
The new Reserve Mechanics & starting Flyers on the Board should actually benefit the list!
Since Vindicators are debatable, that might be subject to change very soon....
Still needs to be tested though

@Elwirfy: This is what i'd make of what you have, keeping most of the equipment you listed:
My main concern with your Army would be that you're quite low on Anti-Tank/Monster ranged weaponry, that's why i'd keep the 2 Vindicators even if they are a bit weak nowadays.

2000p, 5CP, 134PL
Vanguard detachment
HQ:
Lemartes
Elites:
13x Death Company - Jump Packs, Chainswords&BoltPistols
13x Death Company - Jump Packs, Chainswords&BoltPistols
Death Company Dreadnought - BloodTalons, Meltagun, Heavy Flamer, MagnaGrapple
Standard:
5x Tactical Marines - Meltagun, Combi-Melta Sarge
Dedicated Transport:
Rhino - 2 StormBolters

Spearhead detachment
HQ:
Captain - JumpPack, Power Axe, Plasma Pistol
Heavy Support:
Baal Predator - Flamestorm Cannon, Heavy Flamer Sponsons
Baal Predator - Flamestorm Cannon, Heavy Flamer Sponsons
Vindicator - Storm Bolter
Vindicator
Standard:
5x Tactical Marines - Meltagun, Combi-Melta Sarge
Dedicated Transport:
Rhino - 2 StormBolters

I'd probably keep the DC in the Air for DeepStrike with Lemartes.
Rush the wall of tanks with dread forward and have the Captain Support them.
There are very few D6 dmg weapons in the list. (like Lascannons and Melta)

Maybe someone who gets to play more than me can Improve it ;)
