Discussion: Tyranids / 1k Campaign Game - Help with list needed!
« on: March 07, 2016, 04:47:42 PM »
For the next couple of months I'll be playing in my FLGS's campaign and most of the early battles are going to be 1000 pts.  Couple of campaign rules - No LoW (super-heavies or gargantuan), no Forgeworld (@ 1k, allowed in larger games), all Maelstrom Missions, no unbound.

I just got curb stomped twice in last the month.  I've been using Flyrant (only 1 TL Devourer + egrubs), Tervigon, 2xZoeys (separate units), Venom, 6 Genestealers, 3 Warriors (Deathspitters and BarbedStrangler), 10 Gargoyles, Carni with 1 TL Devourer.  First game I was up against Armored Taur list with 2 SkyRays.  I'm the least familiar with Tau and knew it would be a hard game.  Went first and lost my Hive Tyrant turn 1 and wheels came off from there.  Lost 7-15.  Game two was against Orks - Warboss w/ lucky stick, Doc, 30 boys with shootas, 10 grots, 2x5 Lootas, 5 tankbustas in a truck, 3x1 deffcoptas, 5 mek guns (S8 Ap2 blast gets hot variety).  Went second, and weathered the first turn jsut fine.  Turn 2 however, the Hive Tyrant caught a lucky shot and I failed my grounding check and got charged by the big mob. :(  Again, from there, the game spiraled out of control partly because of the Maelstrom cards.  Lost 8-22.  I know Tyranids struggle at low points, but I played a number of games last year and did ok - did things change that drastically in a year?

What do I need to bring to make a tougher list within these restrictions?

For 175 pts. you can take the Faithful (the unit of 16) and the Magos.  So this adds an ObSec unit with some anti-armor (not super reliable, but it's better than we have normally) and more importantly, the ability to use Telepathy powers.  Is this worth it at 1k?

I'm reluctant to take a couple of Mucolids because of the Maelstrom objectives, but I'm open to suggestions.  I was thinking about taking the following this month:

CAD - Tyranids
Flyrant (2xDev + egrubs)
Venom
Zoey
Ripperx3 w/ DS
Termagants x19
Gargoyles x12
Hive Crone
Mawloc

AD - GS Cult
Magos
The Faithful

Thoughts?  Any help is welcome as currently I feel like I'm letting my team down.  :(

Thanks!

Discussion: Sisters Of Battle / WIP Adepta Soritas
« on: September 24, 2015, 02:02:32 PM »
I was going through some of my old boxes of 40k stuff and unearthed a bunch of sisters stuff I've had since they first came out.  Decided to put together a small 1k list and get some fresh paint on them.  Here's a little preview.  All the red is airbrushed (brown, dark red, red with a red/orange brush highlight) - superior on the right is 95% complete.  The sister squad and the guard still need black and grey highlighted, face/hair detailing, and other finishing touches.  I also need to figure out how I'm going to paint the bases.  Celestine is about 70% done out of focus in the background.

I've got Saint Celestine, 2 BS squads with 6 sisters (1 H. flamer & 1 flamer) both in TL M. Melta Immolators, Dominion squad with 5 sister (4 melta) in a TL H. Flamer Immolator, and an Exorcist.  Also have a small allied Guard detachment with CCS, a veteran squad and a vulture with punisher canons (really wanted to work this in as I've had it for a while with no army to put it in).  Larger games I'll add another Exorcist, more Sister squads and maybe the walkers that are terrible, but I really like the way they look.

What do you think about the list?  the Exorcist and the Dominions can handle all types of armor, monstrous creatures or heavy infantry at 1k,  BS Squads can handle hoard, an they've each got backup with the transports (though they are a little fragile), guard can handle objectives, and the Vulture can take care of the skies/clean-up.

Thoughts?

Discussion: Painting / Stormhawks 3rd Company WIP
« on: July 07, 2015, 11:45:36 PM »
With the release of the new book, I decided to unpack my Space Marines and see if I could finish them finally.  Since I haven't touched them in a few years, and I have been painting other things, I learned quite a bit and have now decided to basically repaint everything - same color scheme (more or less), different technique.

Maybe a month or two ago, I posted the following picture.  This was my first test to see if I could paint this army faster than the way I started and I think it worked pretty well.

I changed a few of the colors, but got the same general look and happy with the progress I've made so far.  Here's the StormTalon I started - it's not finished, but it's got enough paint on it to put it on the table.  I will eventually add some weathering like the terrain piece I did, but not quite as heavy to the whole army.

I also tried out a regular space marine, and I thought it looked ok (don't have a picture of it) so I moved on to the Captain.  Still lots more detail work to do, but good enough for now.  One thing I'm sure you'll notice right away is that I'm using the old 25mm bases.  I was thinking about making new custom 32mm resin bases, but I spent so much time making the current ones, I can't justify doing that.  I may get the base extenders I've seen a few places do the road, but I don't play competitively, so I don't feel like I need to have the larger bases.  Feel free to weigh in on that.

Here's a couple shots of a few of the resin bases I already made.  I've got 3 dozen of them painted already and have the molds so I can make plenty more.

I also started on a Land Speeder w/ Typhoon and H. Bolter.

I've also started on a unit of 5 bolted scouts and 4 scout bikes.  Pictured is also the crew for the LS.

Currently I'm looking to finish a 1500 point army by late August for a campaign game at the local store, so I'm going to try really hard to keep updating.  The list is a captain, two 10 man Tac squads in DPs, Bolter scouts in a LSStorm, 4 Sout bikers, a command squad with Apoth & 4 Plasma guns in DP, a MM Dread in DP and an Iron Clad Dread w/ 2 H. Flamers in DP, 2 LS Typhoons and a StormTalon.  Played one game so far and it worked out pretty well.

C&C welcome.
Thanks!

Had a little time this weekend and was inspired to paint some terrain.

It's missing the tail fin currently, but I think I know where it is.  As soon as I locate it, I'll paint it up and add some more pictures.

Discussion: Painting / Tyranid Hive Fleet ???
« on: January 22, 2015, 09:36:39 PM »
I'm taking a break from painting Eldar and started a small Tyranid force.  I spilt a couple of boxes of the DeathStorm box sets at my local store and I got a box of push-together gaunts for paint testing

Here's the color scheme I'm working on currently.

Also, I'm looking for a Hive Fleet name - I like Tiamat, but I found a picture of the color scheme for that and it doesn't match even a little.

Looking to finish up 500 pts before assembling anymore to insure I actually finish the army.  It's an unbound list at the moment with 6 genestealers + broodlord, 1 Carnifex, 1 Zoey, 4 Warriors, and 5 spore mines.  It's not the best list, but I've always liked genestealers and I'll make them work.  Plus, after playing Eldar for the last 1.5 years, I need the challenge.

I've already started on the Zoey and 3 of the genestealers and I will post more pictures soon.  C&C welcome.

Discussion: Eldar / 1750 3 round Local Tournament
« on: September 09, 2014, 11:40:58 PM »
I'm thinking about going to a local store this Saturday and throwing down.  Not sure what the local meta is as I don't usually play in this store, but I though it would be cool to check out.  Didn't want to make an uber spammy list and most of it is painted or at the very least has some paint on it.  I'd like to get some advise on how you think this list might fare.  I've been playing a lot of 1k lately and not sure how this will stand up.  Missions will be a mix of Maelstrom and Eternal War.

Autarch w/ power axe - 85

Howling Banshees x6 (exarch w/ executioner) - 110

Fire Dragons x6 w/ Wave Serpent w/ TL scatter, cannon upgrade and holo - 277

Dire Avengers x8 w/ Wave Serpent w/ TL BL, cannon upgrade and holo (Autarch goes here) - 249

Guardian Defenders x10 w/ BL platform - 110

Jetbikes x3 w/ cannon upgrade - 61

Jetbikes x3 w/ cannon upgrade - 61

Crimson Hunter - PL and x2 BL - 160

Swooping Hawks x6 - 96

Viper w/ x2 Shruiken Cannons & ghostwalk matrix - 70

x3 ShadowWeavers support battery - 90

WarWalkers x2 w/ BL & Scatter each

WraithKnight w/ 2 H. Wraithcannons - 240

I'm thinking of holding back the war walkers and the jet bikes in reserves with the crimson hunter.  First turn the Swooping Hawks will skyleap off the table.  Then I'll pair up the WS with the fire dragons and the viper and go up one flank, and the other WS with the Dire Avengers and the WraithKnight and go up the other flank.  ShadowWeavers will hang back on an objective and the Guardians will sit on another on if possible or move on to a mid-field one.  Banshees will provide mid-field/backfield support as needed or go after an objective if close by (I run Iybraesil craftworld which makes the banshees fluffy - I know they're not great, but they can be a deterrent for some people).  Swooping Hawks can drop into the enemy backfield and take out light infantry (I've had pretty good success with these in the past).  Warwalkers will flank and hopefully pop something with some side or rear shots on later turns.  Crimson hunter can come in and take care of other flyers or tanks.  Jetbikes can help to secure objectives once threats are neutralized.

The list gives me 5 Obj.Sec. units, 2 H. Wraithcannon, 2 PulseLaser, 6 BrightLance, 6 meltagun, 12 ScatterLaser, 18 Shruiken cannon, and 3 small blast ShadowWeaver shots (all at Str 6+) per turn not to mention all the shrunken catapults and the two Serpent Shields.  I think this is enough firepower, but I'm not sure.  Thoughts welcome!

Discussion: Eldar / 400pt Tournament - Casual
« on: January 27, 2014, 04:32:02 PM »
On Saturday, I'm going to a store out near where a friend on mine lives to play a three round tournament.  The rules that I got were 400 points, no models over 2 wounds and no vehicles with total armor value of 33.  It seems like it's going to be a pretty relaxed atmosphere, but I don't typically play games outside my gaming group (typical opponents are Orks and Necrons).  I've only played a few games with Eldar in 6th edition (I have a few other armies and have been playing since the early 90s), but the points restriction is really throwing me off.  Here's what I've come up with so far.

Spiritseer - 70 (only choice due to the 2 wound limit)

Dire avengers x5 - 65

Jetbikes x3 w/ canon upgrade - 61

Jetbikes x3 w/ canon upgrade - 61

Viper w/ 2 Shruiken canons - 60

Swooping Hawks x5 - 80

Total - 397

I don't know what the missions are going to be nor do I know what kinds of armies I'll be playing.  I've never used a Spiritseer mainly because I don't have any Wraith units and I usually run a Mantaurch so I'm not sure how that going to work out.  Because of the vehicle restriction, there won't be any serious armor, so I think 4 Shruiken Canons should be enough.  Except for the Dire Avengers, I'm super mobile.  Am I missing anything?  C&C welcome.

Viper I started painting over the weekend.

Still have to work out the riders.  Don't really like the stock ones.  Trying to finish up a few things for a game this Saturday.  Hopefully more to come.

Been lurking for a while, thought it was time to share.
