New to Daemons, planning an army
« on: January 08, 2014, 11:43:41 AM »
Hi there, I'm thinking of starting a Chaos Daemon army, and have never played them before. They look like a very fun army to play.
I'm in no hurry to start, and I'd like to really plan this one out.
My first army is all second hand marines, and having repainted just about a companies worth, its time for a change.

I've read some good things about Tzeentch, so I think thats the place to start (anyone agree?)

So I thought about the following list

HQ:
Herald of Tzeentch on a disk, lvl3, exalted locus and a greater gift

Troops:
10 pink horrors
10 Plague bearers

Fast:
6 screamers of Tseentch

Total 500 points

The list has to grow ofcourse towards 1000pts, 1500 pts potentially more, but thats for later.

So I was thinking, a few Daemon Princes never hurt (to buy, wrecking face obv. hurts  ;) )
And then what, would a battle force be worth it?

Any advice would be appreciated thanks!

AK
Ultramarines - 6000 points - 85% painted

The battle force is so so.  Tzeentch is very powerful right now.  You look to have a good start to things.  As for where to build from there.  It really depends.  I would go with a Greater Daemon (fateweaver is very good), in order to unlock princes as heavy support.

Looks like you're building towards a Screamerstar. Don't expect your friends to like you if you go that way. :P

HQ:
Kairos Fateweaver
Heralds of Chaos Herald of Tzeentch: Psyker (Mastery Level 3); Disc of Tzeentch; Exalted Reward.
Herald of Tzeentch: Exalted Locus of Conjuration; Psyker (Mastery Level 3); Disc of Tzeentch; Exalted Reward.
Herald of Tzeentch: Psyker (Mastery Level 3); Disc of Tzeentch; Lesser Reward.
Herald of Tzeentch: Psyker (Mastery Level 3); Disc of Tzeentch; Lesser Reward.

Troops:
10 Pink Horrors of Tzeentch
10 Pink Horrors of Tzeentch
10 Daemonettes of Slaanesh
10 Daemonettes of Slaanesh

Fast:
9 Screamers of Tzeentch

Heavy:
Soul Grinder: Daemon of Nurgle; phlegm bombardment.
Soul Grinder: Daemon of Slaanesh; baleful torrent.
Soul Grinder: Daemon of Slaanesh; baleful torrent.

This is a basic Screamerstar list, so you can substitute Nurgle Plaguebearers for the Daemonettes. I've ran 3 Blight Drones before in the list instead of the Soul Grinders. But the SG have a little more staying power, but larger targets. If you don't have Fateweaver use a Lord of Change.

...Grow up, what a waste of a good time...

Thanks for the replies, obiously I don't have Fateweaver, since I'm planning to start Daemons.
So the list you put up is probably the cheese of cheese. But how do you get there from say, the 500pt list I wrote up? Going into a 1000pt list, what would be the first units to add?

It 'll be not until a month or 3-5 before I'll actually start buying Daemons, but I'd like to ge a clear picture of what's good and what's not.
I read all kinds of cool stuff on Flesh hounds, but they'll cost you a kidney or two.
I really see this as a side project next to my main army (marines) just for fun. Allthough this doesn't mean it can be competative too ;)

My friends who got me into the hobby lured me with some small two on two games. When I finally got 1500 pts together they opened me a can of whoop ass. This was last year, the boys I'm playing against play IG, Tau, Eldar, Dark Eldar and Nids, they deserve to get whooped themselves  ;D

Flesh Hounds are good, but not as fast (and thus not as flexible) as Screamers. They're very straight forward to use as well, you simply scout up, but Grimoire on them take shooting for a turn and then charge in with the biggest multi-charge you can manage. It will run over a lot of armies who've deployed poorly (which is probably the hardest part of 40K anyway). And for models, the standard is probably to buy Chaos Warhounds from Fantasy and paint them appropriately.

As for the Screamerstar, I think the Screamerstar/Flying Circus combination looks better than the one with Soul Grinders. One, it gives saturation on FMC and two it helps with Skyfire. But it's just up to personal preference I suppose.
An example:
HQ
Daemonic Heralds
Herald of Tzeentch- Exalted Daemonic Reward (Grimoire), Disc of Tzeentch, Psyker Level 3
Herald of Tzeentch - Greater Daemonic Reward (Greater Etherblade), Disc of Tzeentch, Exalted Locus of Conjuration, Psyker Level 3
Herald of Tzeentch - Greater Daemonic Reward (Greater Etherblade), Disc of Tzeentch, Psyker Level 3
Herald of Tzeentch - Lesser Daemonic Reward (Etherblade), Disc of Tzeentch, Psyker Level 3
Kairos Fateweaver

Troops
10x Daemonettes
10x Daemonettes

Fast Attack
5x Screamers

Heavy Support
Daemon Prince - Exalted Daemonic Reward (Portalglyph), Daemonic Flight, Warp-forged Armour, Psyker Level 3
Daemon Prince - Greater Daemonic Reward, Daemonic Flight, Warp-forged Armour, Psyker Level 3

As for scaling... the power builds of Daemons doesn't really scale well in the low points as their good stuff is really expensive. It's once you reach that peak they start rolling.

Nice one on the warhounds, I'm guessing the vampire counts dire wolves would be cool aswell, plus it'll save you a kidney and a half :)

Same here, they do double duty. Then again all my daemons do double duty between the two systems.

I'd add the following to your list at the next 500pts

HQ
Herald of Tzeentch on a disk, lvl3, exalted locus and a greater gift

Troops:
10 pink horrors

Fast:
3 screamers of Tseentch

Heavy:
Soul Grinder

Nooooo! We don't need another screamer star!

Yes to soul grinder, yes to more pink horrors and try out a daemon Prince :)
