Worth building older models?
« on: March 08, 2016, 06:12:57 PM »
Hi all,

I lost most of my old figures over the years, but found these three blister packs tucked away.  The main army I am building is  Dark Angels Space marines, but I do have some Harlequin troupes, and was thinking of using them in a second army build.  I do not have a new codex, and am just curious if people thing it would be worth building these or just leaving them in the packs... They are a Death Jester, Harlequin Jet Bike, and two generic Harlequin Troupes.  So, worth building, or better off leaving as is a s curios from a number of years ago.

Thanks,

Number6

I've never seen an older 40k model being worth more than retail.  I recently picked up a bunch of 3rd Edition Tyranids, my preferred product range, new in box for less than brand new current versions of the same unit.  Most older models will go for significantly less because of how challenging it is to build an army out of them, or because of how goofy some might consider the moulds.  If you were to keep them as just relics of a bygone age, may as well build them up.  Paint them up nice for display or use.

Cool thanks.  I wasn't sure about the Jet Bike, as I haven't seen any and wasn't sure if they were still used.  I'll agree they might be fun to build, but not as flexible as the newer ones.  I remember the initial lamenting about the loss of the metal figures, but I am REALLY liking how easy it is to build the new stuff.  I keep hoping to find some of my other metal figures, I know I packed them when we moved 10 years ago, but haven't been able to locate them, so I am thinking they were lost in transit.

Thanks again,

N6

Hey, if you can build an entire army using old out if print models like harlequinn then go for it. I'm a fan of newer casts myself but that hasn't stopped me from finding an old sculpt I'd fall in love with. My skaven Rage of Sigmar army has a few old sculpts sneaking their way in, because of what shark remarked, they're often cheaper.
Don't try making a unit unkillable. its a waste of time and the dice gods laugh at you for wasting your time. Dedicate a unit to a job and make sure it does it til it's either dead or running.

The one in the red blister isn't a deathjester it is Maugan Ra the dark reaper Phoenix Lord.

Lots of OOP stuff goes for more than current retail on eBay, just depends what it is and what kind of demand there is for it. That said, it's probably not worth the hassle to sell them, even if you can get a decent price for them. I'd just use them. People love to see those old models when you show up with them at your FLGS.

The price tags on those blisters have me reeling... I am missing those days right about now.

Definitely build and paint them up. Personally I like to have a mix of old and 'modern' models in my armies. Adds flavor and as said sometimes Goofyness (my old CSM Obliterators for example lol)
