Tell me a cool moment you had playing with your IG
« on: April 22, 2015, 09:37:30 AM »
Without making this post super long and to give kind of a little bit of back story. At my local gaming club with have a couple IG players and the few game I have seen them play the dice gods just weren't with them. One guy got tabled by Dark Eldar. The other guy lost three infantry blobs and his hq turn one to a Grey knight/Space Wolves nova power from a drop pod, which ended with him getting tabled a couple turns later.

Now to me, this doesn't make the Guard look good and that isn't fair to the guard. So tell me something cool you had happen when you were playing guard.

It's a few years back now, but at one of the club 40K swap meets a buddy was selling his Mordian Iron Guard all infantry army for next to nothing so I picked it up. Added three deathstrike missiles and some sentinels from another trade and I was all set to play.

In one game vs. Chaos I rolled for the DS missiles on the second turn and all three fired off, landing in the CSM deployment zone which was still very tightly packed.

The look on both our faces was a moment in time that will never be repeated.

Moments like that is why I play and continue to play this game.

Though my men may sleep, and my ships rest at anchor, my foes know full well that big guns never tire...

Look on my works ye mighty, and despair...

Yes, the fun crazy dice roll moments make this game amazing. I know this has nothing to do with IG, but me and my friend were playing a team game against a couple of other players and they had the necron guy that can take control of a vehicle to make a shooting attack. He was deployed in a flyer with some Lychguard to keep him safe, they flow up the table warped out just close enough to my exorcist to be able to take control of it. Actually got it, shoot the back of my rhino which exploded 6" and killed everything around it. The explosion killed about 20 models, most of them where my models so it sucked. But it was still an epic explosion that ended any hope of the eldar and sisters of battle team to beat out the necrons and tyranid.

I killed 1 and three quarters of two jet bike squads with two regular scions in Close Combat after a momentous melee.
It was pretty dope.
I also killed Typhus and 5 terminators with two squads of 10 Guardsmen as well as a CCS (with Creed, Kell all the advisors etc.) In a round of shooting and 3 rounds of melee.
Guy was silly enough to go after Invisible Creed & Co.
That was pretty dope.
I mean, I've had my entire army obliterated by D weapon blasts first turn. But, you know. Live and learn with guard.
OH I almost forgot. I destroyed an Eldar Scorpion Heavy Tank in 2 rounds of shooting with 2 squads of scions. (I death or gloried with one squad, took off 4 hull points with one melta shot.)
That was also dope.

So there is still hope for the guard still! I was getting worried when one of the guard players at my store put a large blast template in front of his artillery piece and scattered onto himself and my Sisters of Battle while we were trying to purge some Tyranids.

Yeah, guard are far from dead.  ;D
Sounds like your buddies have look at their lists and tactics a bit more.
Playing Guard, you have to have a completely different mind set to a lot of other 40k players. I find with 40k, you'll win a lot more if you can imagine yourself as an ACTUAL commander of your army. Looking at what your strengths are (within your list, at the least), your weaknesses and doing the same with the opposing player.
I love the feeling of the army, especially if you come out on top with it. Your army won, the REGULAR humans won. They don't need super heroes in ceramite, evolving space bugs, the gifts of daemonic gods or any damn blinker lights. They set up their lascannons, grip their lasguns and roll out the tanks.
Damn straight. That was so damn patriotic, I feel like playing right now.  ::)

America!

Anyway, yeah I can't blame them, but I can blame them for placing the large blast in front of the thing firing it. No guts no glory I guess, one day I hope to see the normal humans in space beat back some xenos for the Emperor. But that day has yet to come...

It's your buddy's tactics, it isn't the army.

I play allied guard and marines. Here are some recent games:

In a 4000 point game, after a melta shot blew up a trukk, a single Leman Russ blast killed all 8 nobs who piled out.

A master of ordnance called an artillery strike against some termagaunts. It scattered, and wiped out a unit of tyranid warriors instead. A nearby unit ended up out of synapse, and abandoned its objective.

Deploying second against a gunline, I used a blob of about 40 conscripts as a syphon unit at one end of the board, holding an objective in ruins boosted by my techmarine. For 3 turns, my opponent threw half his army into shooting that squad before conceding, having been wrecked elsewhere. About a third of the squad survived, but they still held the objective.

Outflanking conscripts came in, got twin-linked by a primaris psyker, got extra shots thanks to an order, and destroyed a unit of thunderwolf cavalry.

Facing a chaos daemon summoning-themed list with 2+ rerollable invul save shennanigans in a 750 point league game, ministorum priests gave my bike captain his own absurd 2+ rerollable armor save. After a few turns, the randomness of the chaos dice went against him and he lost the 2+ save long enough for me to eliminate its source and clean up.
