Brand new to Tau, Trying my hand at 1850 competitive list
« on: July 20, 2015, 12:55:10 AM »
Okay for starters, before anyone gets all salty, I am a brand new Tau player/collector/painter figuring i can try my hand at bettering the Greater Good. Some background on me as a player:

I am very much an aggressive player, having played Eldar for the better part of 3 editions (about 5-6 years) I have developed a hyper aggressive play style with them, using deep strike, infiltrate, and fast mobility shenanigans to out maneuver and destroy my opponents.

Now, I understand that Tau is 100% against the assault, as well as getting to close to the enemy (save for the fusion gun shots ;) ) I was going for a similar build type with them, one that focused on really dictating the battle and forcing my opponent to react to how my warhost moves. After searching on the interweb's I found a few lists and some battle reports featuring what is called the Farsight Bomb and i instantly fell in love. The list below has my first take on " the bomb" as well as my first take on how it should be supported.

Primary:

FE

HQ:

Farsight

Body guard:
5 suits
2 with dual fusion guns and target locks
2 with dual plasma
1 with dual plasma, vectored retro thrusters, and the Tailsman

They have 7marker drones with them

Elites:

Riptide

Earth caste, Ion gun, Plasma, Early warning override, and Stim

Troops:

3 Suits
2 with dual plasma
1 with dual plasma and drone controller

they have 6 gun drones

3 suits
3 with dual fusion and target locks

Heavy Support:

1 Broadside with bonding knife, HYMP, SMS, and a seeker missle

Allies: Tau Empire

HQ:

Buffmander with:
CC node
Multi spec suit
Neuro web
Ongar gauntlet
Puretide chip
and Iridium armour
stim injector

Troops:

2 x 6 fire warrior squads with rifles in fish that have seeker missles and disruption pods

Comes to 1847 points

What do you guys think of the list so far fellow tau players?

How can i trim down the list and add more dakka?

My over all plan is to only buy what is needed for an effective 1850 tourny list paint it very well and limit my expenses so i dont blow the back end out of my wallet and I focus on a good play style before expanding!

Tear that list apart, LET ME HAVE IT!

Wonder why 7 marker drones (quite a lot!), in a single unit they would focus on one target only; why not split them?
Seeker missile on the broadside/devilfish… not sure. Cheap but one use only; I’d rather put that on a drone controller on a crisis with drones.
Not a huge fan of riptide (big – always visible, good survivability but if you wanna max the dakka I’d think more along the lines of 3 crisis suits).
Only one early warning override? Not much… get 2-3 terminators or similar landing in your backyard and it is bbq time for your folks :(
Few thoughts…:)

Get rid of the ally, Farsight Enclave can now use tau support systems. 2x commanders, Mark-O-Buffiness & another Commander /or Farsight Himself, CRYSIS TROOPS & Body Guards. PLASMA-IONS-FUSION.
THE END

Things I've learned being an aggressive player while only playing tau for the last two years. First at their core they're a gunline army. We can make things mobile with deepstrike and devilfish but our biggest hitters like to be stationary. I.e. Broadsides and pathfinders. Second they should be renamed codex xenos hunter. Due to the fact that any xenos that relies on cover has no chance and 90% of our weapons ignore 4+ armor. Third split fire is the best upgrade you can get period. Free rhino equivalent don't bother tau. Av13&14 are another issue altogether still strategizing on how to deal with two landraiders at a time. In my opinion tau struggle against marines when it comes to killing the infantry. Not a lot of ap3 in the book compared to other books. Fourth don't be terrified of the assault just know when to pick your fights. I had twelve fire warriors win against the thirty man fearless blob, but dedicated assault will make you scoop dudes every time. The army has been a great learning experience. Really helped me with target priority. Hopefully this gives you some insight on what to expect a little. For reference my meta is 10 space marine players with one of each xenos counting myself, and only one chaos player.

You can't put sig systems on FSE Riptides anymore. You can run the Pilot Array on a commander or crisis suit. For the time being, if you want it on a Riptide it has to be with the Eight.
